Roughly Sixty Percent of Seniors Want Patient Engagement Technology

When it comes to patients that are seniors, this population tends to be the most at risk in the healthcare industry.  Many of them are aware of this and realize in today’s world of having technology combing with the health industry, it is vital that they find ways to keep track of their health.  That is what the results of a recent survey supports, which is roughly sixty percent of seniors want patient engagement technology.

Several days ago, writer Sara Heath took a look at the concerns senior patients have about going forward with their healthcare and how many want more control in monitoring their health. Their answer in succeeding in this endeavor lies within patient engagement technology, where it can see their concerns regarding their health satisfied, connect effectively with their providers and in managing their health.


According to a survey taken recently by Toluna on behalf of Alignment Healthcare, fifty-nine percent of senior patients ranging from fifty-five and older stated their concerns going forward with their healthcare.  Senior patients within the healthcare industry are considered as being a hard population to care for as one out of three respondents of the one-thousand surveyed revealed they are monitoring a minimum of one chronic condition.  Twenty percent of patients stated they are monitoring and taking care of heart disease; according to the CDC, this is the highest cause of death. 

The Importance of Patient Engagement Technology

There are many reasons why senior patients are anxious about their health concerns and one reason, brought out in the survey, is the realization that they are an expensive part of the population; the authors of the survey point out that these patients roughly total thirteen percent of all patients, but senior care visits are thirty-four percent of the costs of healthcare.  The survey revealed how concerned they are over these issues while fifty-nine percent of those surveyed stated how anxious they get regarding upcoming changes within their healthcare.


The concerns for seventy percent of patients have concerns associated with Medicaid and Medicare as far as changes to health programs; however, a higher percent are worried about this within the fifty-five to fifty-nine age group (considering they are getting ready to be eligible for Medicare) than those over seventy share concerns regarding Medicaid and Medicare.  Nevertheless, these stats show why senior patients want the ability to monitor their own healthcare.

Those surveyed reported that access to health information and patient engagement technology will assist patients to conquer these concerns while being able to improve their overall health.  Seventy-percent of patients surveyed stated that having access to better health data would assist them with managing their chronic disease.   Also, patients stated they wanted to have access to technology that assists in better ways of connecting to their physicians.

The fact is, most patients want better and additional access to their doctors considering only two-thirds of patients presently see their physicians at a minimum of once per six months; most have said those appointments were insufficient.  What further explains the desire of patients to monitor their own health is the visits are simply too short (roughly ten minutes), adding the visits do not provide chronic care techniques of management that patients need and want, the data needed regarding health conditions and options for treatments.


Another interest of patients is in concierge access to medicine, where patients are wanting their doctors to make visits to their home in making access to them easier.  This should not be concerned with traditional concierge medicine that is where a patient gets better access to a provider for paying a capitated monthly fee. 

While senior patients surveyed requests are legitimate, there are others that in our present environment seem unrealistic or plausible, such as one in ten who responded stated they wanted complimentary rides to office visits and home visitations from their doctors.  Twenty-four percent voiced interest in getting notifications regarding remote patient monitoring while twenty-one percent would like on-demand access to a doctor through telehealth.  Lastly, one out of three patients want to receive same-day appointments; those who responded feel that that patient engagement technology will assist patients get the form of care they want.

The bottom line is that healthcare industry and technology are constantly changing with innovations aimed at making things better for patients.  Unfortunately, there are seniors who will need to adapt and given the opportunity to use upcoming technology meant to better their lives while encourage health management to those who are unwilling or nervous to undertake. Once seniors can access patient engagement technology, this will help to support their own ability in succeeding in their own healthcare management.
