  • Using the command prompt
  • By Windows – Recovery method

Using the Command Prompt

Step 1: Go to the Settings, Update and Recovery, and then select Recovery over there. Then tap on the Advanced Startup and click on Restart Now button.

Step 2: In the next window, select Troubleshoot and click on Advanced Options.

Step 3: Open Command Prompt and you will be redirected to the login page.

Step 4: Select your Administrator account and enter the password. Then click on continue to proceed.

Step 5: Now type the following commands in the command prompt window and hit enter after each command

cd %windir%\system32\config
ren system system.001
ren software software.001

Step 6: The command prompt redirects to ‘Windows Recovery Environment Screen’ then click on Continue.

Step 7: Then, you have to reboot your PC and the issue will be fixed.

By Windows Recovery method

Not all the times can the first method that we have mentioned works. If it doesn’t work, you make it work with this method. However, you will be needing an ISO image of your Windows to create a custom recovery image.

Step 1: First, open My Computer, go to Local Disk (C) and create a new folder with name ‘Win-Recovery’.

Step 2: Search for ‘install.wim’ file in ISO image source file, copy it and paste into the newly created folder.

Step 3: Now open the command prompt and then type REAGENTC/INFO as shown above and you will find that the recovery location is missing.

Step 4: Now set the custom recovery path, reagent/SetOSImage /Path C:\WIN-Recovery\install.wim /Index 1

Step 5: Then you have to recheck the updated location by using “REAGENTC /INFO.” command.

After completing these steps, it shows the new updated location. Now, restart your PC.
